Mobile Learning in Education and Teaching

From School of Education, at ULACIT, I will share the Research on Mobile Learning.

Introduction

In recent years, many studies have been done regarding mobile learning in various devices such as iPhone, tablets, Android phones, many of these investigations lead to the same conclusion that mobile devices with Internet connections bring innovation in different environments which students are exposed thus being a tool that would help improve learning languages like English. This would help with vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking and also improve student participation in the various means of collaboration such as forums, Facebook, blackboard. These advances help to have better communication between the student and the teacher as more easily could send and receive assignments, texts or images. Unfortunately, the technology innovation has everything going for it as are the limitations of institutions, teachers who resist change or students who do not have access to technology.

Problems

Mobile education could help improve the quality of teachers and basic education as well as perform the different types of learning for each student need and improve their commitment to the study.
One of the biggest problems I encountered in the research are for example the lack of access to quality content: there are over 70 million children who are not enrolled in any institution, while the mobile network would allow a platform to improve this reality.
Untrained teachers: this tool could help teachers prepare lessons more fun, better planning’s of lessons, more activities and better and more accessible refresher courses
Lack of suitable approaches: students could have a big impact if they had better solutions to their problems and needs, and thus a more individual and personalized learning that even the most developed schools could improve.
Lack of data on student performance: the ability and student development standards are generally measured according to the country and not really what you should measure or qualify.

How can M-Learning help to improve learning and teaching?

Mobile learning is completely changing the way we learn, and think; today people do not learn only from the lessons of the classes, now could learn anywhere, on a bus, in the car, recreation, can participate much more through forums or social networks.

It could be improved through collaborative learning, which tells us that is when "2 or more people learn together" this could include projects, discussions, activities, forums. Also something I use it a lot as well as my coworkers and study are the means where we can share documents such as Google Drive, Dropbox, including Facebook with study groups.

The M-learning, allows us to get to each student learning activities or ways according to their needs, characteristics and level of the student as an issue that needed to teach. Don Menn states "Students recall just 10% of What They read and 20% of What They hear. Accompanying visuals have an oral presentation, the number rises to 30%, and If They observe someone carrying out an action while explaining it, 50%. But remember 90% students do the job If They Themselves, even if only as a simulation. "

Justification. Why teachers should engage M-learning?

Among all the reasons I have outlined in this research, we can emphasize the most important that may be that could be accessible as we have a variety of devices nowadays, many free apps for learning as well as the ease of having any information available to students, parents and teachers.

The cost is cheaper because most applications are free and have great ease of obtaining devices which makes it more accessible than anything else.

We can share faster than light!!!! With drop box, google drive, and others. Parents and teachers have a significant opportunity to stay in touch and updated on what happens to their children.

The academic rigor could be related to the amount of applications which could have communicated, such as Blackboard application which leaves us send and receive related assignments ratings and forum messages. Last but not least the use of technology and new growth make us more productive people and helps us prepare a future full of technology.

Survey Objectives

·         Learning about student teacher knowledge regarding mobile learning
·         Develop technological skills between student and teacher
·         Understanding the role and impact of mobile technology in the learning area

Survey Methodology

·         The method for reaching people and conduct the survey was thru email asking my peers and teachers via email with the link to the survey attached was one my methods to get professors responded to the questionnaire. Also, I asked face to face my peers in class to complete the survey on their phones, tablets or computers based on a link invitation.
·         Another method was to publish into my Facebook profile, therefore, all my contacts were able to complete the questions. Through this research and experiences, I have thought about modifying a class, which requires a period of preparation and ensure the students are ready and expect the students to read, reflect, reinforce and reexamined to ensure the content have been understood.

Learning Strategy

Read: the use of e-books to allow students to access the class content
Reflect: to ensure preparation through reading, each chapter will be associated with flashcards that require student to determine their own level of understanding and it will be around 10-15 mins of review.
Reinforce: in class or out of class activities can be given to reinforce the concept, with activities that involve the use of apps.
Re-examine: the use of blackboard as tool to administer and grade test allows teacher/student the ability to control their speed of their M-Learning and the possibility of redoing the work.

Limitations

The only two limitations could find would be the small screens which could be a problem for people with vision problems, or for activities that require larger screens, the 2nd would be the lack of interest in the administrative part of the various institutions to integrate this type of technology in classrooms which limits both teachers and students to maximize their potential.

Conclusions

I have found here in evidence that shows us the potential associated with the use of mobile technology in learning English or any other assignment. It helps us to be more interested in learning, students more focused and more committed, more participation in communities which results in better skills in all aspects, grammar, listening, speaking and writing.
There is no single recipe if you like any other educational mobile element can be positive or negative depending on the needs of the student, teacher, learning objectives or activities to do.
Yet it is important to bear in mind that we can take advantage of many of the advantages of using electronic devices that many people have, in this way we help students achieve technological skills which will allow meaningful learning for students.

About me...

I am studying English Teacher and Translator at ULACIT, but I actually work as a Systems Engineer and I love systems, applications and everything related with computers, This is one of my last courses for me to graduate, My goal is to have a MBA on systems Admin IT, not really being a Teacher, but life happens!!!!
I have 2 beautiful boys, who love to play, and I also have an extremely busy life, between my boys, my house, husband, work, college, not time for myself, So I will enjoy this blog a lot!!!

This blog has been made in order to have weekly post about our courses at ULACIT Costa Rica. It also provides students with the opportunity to read and enjoy excellent literary masterpieces: short stories, novels, poems, essays and movies, as a means to develop and increase critical thinking and academic writing.
I will also add techniques for our English lessons to make them more interest and dynamic to our students.
